FaithFest 2014 happens this Saturday

The annual Christian music festival put on by The Rock Church of Soulard is happening this Saturday in Soulard Market Park. FaithFest 2014: "Putting the 'Soul' back in SOULard" happens on Saturday August 16 in Soulard. The event goes from 9 am to 5 pm (or 7 pm) and features such musical acts as Mercy's Child, Kingdom Brothers, Friends with Jesus, East to West, Minimee, and the Rockin' REVs. This is the fifth year for the event.

Tomorrow be on the lookout for loud Christian music, prayer-walkers and panhandlers taking advantage of people caught up in the Holy Spirit.

The Rock Church of Soulard has a webpage, a Twitter account and a Facebook page, but don't expect to find much more information.

Ashborne Benefit Show At Off Broadway

I usually don't blog about music, mainly because y'all really don't want to hear about my love for Footloose, Adele, country music and The Voice.

But, this Saturday happens to be a benefit show just off the island at Off Broadway that a great friend of mine is involved in.

If you have know me; have been to Carson's for karaoke; or both, you probably know who Bobby Jones is. Not only is he a helluva guy and one of those people who can run Ironman races, he also is musically gifted.

He was in this band called Ashborne that played all around St. Louis.  When he was in school at Wash U, I know he played down on The Landing a lot. The band has had quite a few twists, turns and different members from what I understand through the years.

This Saturday, the whole clan is getting back together for a show to benefit kidney cancer awareness. Check out the Facebook event page.

Cover is $15 for those over 21 and $17 for the babies.  All of the money goes to the cause.

Ballin' on a Budget

So you wanna be a balla, shot calla and ride around in an Impala, but don't have the resources? Here are a few tips that apply all day-every day; not just during happy times

• You can bring whatever food you want into iTap.  Got leftovers?  bring them. HotPocket? Jimmy John's? bring it or have it delivered It's all the goodness of a Winery without the crappy stuff (the wine)
• We live way to close to the "Oldest Farmer's Market West of the Mississippi" for you not to take advantage of all it has to offer.  Shop until you drop for meats, cheeses, veggies, fruits and knock-off sunglasses among other things. W-F 8a-5p and Sat 6a-5:30p. The best time to go is Saturday morning.  Feel free to barter, you're likely to snag a deal especially late in the day on Saturday

Books, Movies and Music

• Amaze people with your excellent selection of movies and music, just don't tell them you went to the Barr Branch library at Jefferson and Lafayette and got it all for free. Enhance your mind through the written word. The Barr Branch has a wide selection of magazines and newspapers to go with the books.Don't have a printer at home?  You can print things out from the internet-connected computers at the library.Check out all the library has to offer at http://www.slpl.org .  You can browse the catalog for the whole library system, find out about cool events going on, and even request books from anywhere in the system and have them delivered to the Barr Branch
• The days of going to the Blockbuster store to rent a movie are over.  If you don't subscribe to Netflix or can't find what you want on Watch Instantly, you can rent movies for $1/night at either the new outdoor Redbox at the Walgreen's on Lafayette or at the DvdNow kiosk at Vincent's Market
