Saturday 4/20: A Great Day In Soulard

Some people who like to hear themselves talk will tell you that 4/20 is a day to smoke the pot. They will then proceed to laugh like they made a funny joke that no one has heard before.

Saturday 4/20/13 was a great day in Soulard. The Sweet Divine opened to a line at 8am, 50+ island neighbors volunteered to set-up, pour beer and clean up at the Tap 'N' Run. and the Shakespeare Festival St. Louis brought Shakespeare to Soulard.

The Sweet Divine brings their award-winning cakes and cupcakes to the island as well as coffee, espresso and pastries.

Tap 'N' Run brought 3,600 runners to Soulard for a great time. Jam Active, which runs these races all across the country, said the Soulard race was the largest race they have put on. They credited the Soulard Restoration Group volunteers for the event running so smoothly.

Members of the Alpha Psi Omega chapter at Saint Louis University practiced for weeks to put on a performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream in front of Sweet Divine on the corner of 9th and Soulard. The event was part of the Shake38, the 38-play Shakespeare marathon that brings his plays to various places across St. Louis. It is part of the Shakespeare St. Louis Festival.

GO! Marathon Cheer Station This Sunday

If you are the running type you know that this is GO! St. Louis Marathon Weekend. The marathon is on Sunday morning. For the best couple of years, the residents of Soulard have put on a cheer station at the corner of 12th and Sidney. In previous years, the race organizers took a vote of the runners to award $1000 to the best cheer station. After two straight years of Soulard winning, the race no longer gives an award in this category. So, show up this Sunday, April 7, at the corner of 12th and Sidney to hang out with neighbors and cheer on the runners. The runners will greatly appreciate it. In what has become a Soulard tradition, the theme is "Pajama Party". Roll out of bed and show up in your best jammies. As was seen last year, please wear something decent, even under a robe. The cheer station will feature a potluck assortment of breakfast foods and drinks. Feel free to bring your own.

When: Sunday April 7

Time: 7AM

Where: Corner of 12th & Sidney

Tap 'N' Run In Soulard July 28

The people who put on the Tap 'N' Run 4K are bringing their epic race to St. Louis this year. Where better to have it than on the Island? July 28th at 2 pm, it's on like Donkey Kong. Do you really need to know what this is before signing up? Check out the videos. Not a fast runner? Wear a sweet 'stache and you could still win a prize. Register here.

Check out the route. You're starting over at Grizzly Bear, and cutting South to A-B via 12th for most of the way. You round the fields over by the Boys' Club and come make North along 11th. That should be a fun  route. Eventually, you will end up at Market Park by way of some weird, zig-zaggy pattern.

Get a team together now and register.  Be Sure to check out their Facebook page.
