Pet Parade, Taste, Wiener Dog Derby and The Bacon Brothers

This weekend plays host to three awesome events on the Mardi Gras calendar, Taste of Soulard, the Beggin' Pet Parade and the PetSmart Wiener Dog Derby

The Beggin' Pet Parade is always a great time and this year will celebrate its 20th year. The parade portion steps off at 1pm from the corner of Menard and Allen. It will end at Soulard Market Park.

The PetSmart Wiener Dog Derby is a spectacle to watch and this year will move slightly east to right in front of the Market entrance in Rudy Plaza. This gives the stage a beautiful backdrop of the Market.

The Southern Comfort Taste of Soulard will be held on Saturday and Sunday from 11am-5pm. If you have never been, you need to make it a point to come. You buy a ticket booklet at one of the participating establishments and then basically "crawl" around Soulard using your tickets to sample six signature dishes and a Southern Comfort drink. Shuttles are available to take you from place to place. They will most likely have the heat on, in case you were wondering.

Here are my picks after going through the list of food choices at Taste:

Arcelia's: Chicken Albondigas
DB's: Old Man or knuckle sandwich (check out the DB's menu to see the awesomeness that those are)
Franco: Wild Mushroom Gougere
Soulard's Restaurant: Bread Pudding with Whiskey Sauce
Clementine's: Mini Deep-fried Oyster Po-Boy
Epic: Slice of Cheese Pizza (on the list because it seems like the most filling by far)

In a fitting highlight-end to the weekend, the Bacon Brothers will take the stage at 9th and Lafayette after riding in the Pet Parade as Grand Marshals. Michael and Kevin Bacon are both near the top of their respective main careers, but when they pair up with their bandmates they become a very well-reviewed musical act.  The brothers call their genre of music "forosoco", which apparently harks to their blending of several different genres.

The brothers take turns singing lead. Here's Kevin singing lead on "Only A Good Woman"

  1. Apparently the Blackened Chicken Pizza at Joanie's is a must-try as well
