Saturday 4/20: A Great Day In Soulard

Some people who like to hear themselves talk will tell you that 4/20 is a day to smoke the pot. They will then proceed to laugh like they made a funny joke that no one has heard before.

Saturday 4/20/13 was a great day in Soulard. The Sweet Divine opened to a line at 8am, 50+ island neighbors volunteered to set-up, pour beer and clean up at the Tap 'N' Run. and the Shakespeare Festival St. Louis brought Shakespeare to Soulard.

The Sweet Divine brings their award-winning cakes and cupcakes to the island as well as coffee, espresso and pastries.

Tap 'N' Run brought 3,600 runners to Soulard for a great time. Jam Active, which runs these races all across the country, said the Soulard race was the largest race they have put on. They credited the Soulard Restoration Group volunteers for the event running so smoothly.

Members of the Alpha Psi Omega chapter at Saint Louis University practiced for weeks to put on a performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream in front of Sweet Divine on the corner of 9th and Soulard. The event was part of the Shake38, the 38-play Shakespeare marathon that brings his plays to various places across St. Louis. It is part of the Shakespeare St. Louis Festival.

Feraro's Donating To New Jersey This Weekend

Feraro's Pizza on 10th Street will be donating 20% of their sales tomorrow and Sunday to New Jersey folks in need after Hurricane Sandy tore through the state.

The Feraro clan is originally from New Jersey. According to this great RFT story from 2009, owner Jon Feraro worked summers in New Jersey pizza shops growing up and perfected his craft there.

20% of sales from both the Soulard location and the South County location will be donated.

Delivery is available throughout Soulard, Benton Park and Downtown St. Louis. Call 314-588-8345.

Car Show, Crawfish Boil and Blues Cruise Saturday

This Saturday, the 19th, bring two great events to the Island.  Hammerstone's is having their annual car show in front of their establishment.  Expect cars, food, music and awesome people watching of course.

The Price's Annual Crawfish Boil is also on Saturday from 3p-Midnight. It's held on that short block of 10th between Allen and Geyer. Expect great food, live music and plenty of cold beverages.  It's $25 All-You-Can-Consume and is benefits the Cancer Support Center of St. Louis. Bring your own mug. This is one of my favorite annual events in Soulard. Call 314-229-0155 or 314-853-4855 for more information.

The Blues Cruise is also the weekend. Fittingly, St. Louis' Blues Week Festival kicks off this this event on the Island. 9 venues will be playing host to bands this year and a $10 wristband gets you into all of them. Also, be aware if you don't plan on attending the Cruise, that these 9 venues will have covers. A shuttle will be running between the 9 venues for those with wristbands.

Bark in the Park Kick-Off Party

This Wednesday, International Tap House on 9th will play host to the Humane Society's Bark in the Park Kick-Off Party. The event starts at 6pm and details of this year's Bark in the Park event will be revealed.  I don't know what details there are to reveal, but here's what hooked me:
If you RSVP by tomorrow (4/24) your first drink is on the Humane Society of Missouri AND the first 50 people will receive a fancy Bark in the Park pint glass. Here's the link. Registration is FREE.

Here's some information on Bark in the Park that was in the email I got:
Bark in the Park is the largest dog festival in the Midwest. The family and pet-friendly event kicks off at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 19th, with the Walk for Animals dog walk, followed by an afternoon full of entertainment, food, activities and fun – all while benefitting homeless animals. Proceeds from the event benefit the Animal Cruelty Fund – dedicated to investigating, healing and preventing animal abuse. Registration is $25 for adults and $5 for kids 15 and under and includes an official Bark in the Park t-shirt. Kids under three and pets are free! Ashborne Benefit Show At Off Broadway

I usually don't blog about music, mainly because y'all really don't want to hear about my love for Footloose, Adele, country music and The Voice.

But, this Saturday happens to be a benefit show just off the island at Off Broadway that a great friend of mine is involved in.

If you have know me; have been to Carson's for karaoke; or both, you probably know who Bobby Jones is. Not only is he a helluva guy and one of those people who can run Ironman races, he also is musically gifted.

He was in this band called Ashborne that played all around St. Louis.  When he was in school at Wash U, I know he played down on The Landing a lot. The band has had quite a few twists, turns and different members from what I understand through the years.

This Saturday, the whole clan is getting back together for a show to benefit kidney cancer awareness. Check out the Facebook event page.

Cover is $15 for those over 21 and $17 for the babies.  All of the money goes to the cause.

Matt Quain Fundraiser Wednesday at Joanie's

A fundraiser will be held tomorrow night at Joanie's for Matt Quain.  Matt is a part of the family at Joanie's and thus is a part of our family here on the Island.  On Oct 21., he was the latest victim of a senseless act by hooligans that they regard as the "Knockout Game." You may remember that he was initially helped by Mayor Slay and his bodyguard. This fundraiser is to help Matt with his medical expenses and show our overall support for him.  The event will feature live music starting at 6 pm from some of Soulard's favorite local musicians. Prize drawings and a 50/50 raffle will also be held. Food will be provided by various Island restaurants. Here is the link to the Facebook event page.

Iron Barley Raises Money For Lift for Life Academy...by Making a BLT

As some of you may have heard, Iron Barley, an excellent BBQ establishment on Virginia Ave in South City, recently made the World's Largest BLT.  We aren't talking about how some places say they have world famous sandwiches that turn out to be less than stellar. We are talking about having the Guinness Book of World Records official tape measured record for the biggest BLT.  This year's badboy used 600 pounds of bacon.  After measurements were taken, people paid $5/slice to consume said badboy.  All of the money raised went to our own Lift for Life Academy.

Credit the Riverfront Times for a great blog post on the event.

Anti-credit to The Mason and Remy Show on local country station 93.7 The Bull for posting this . They elected to post an MSNBC video of the event, neglect to mention it happened in St. Louis, and take what I consider a potshot at Iron Barley for doing this instead of "feeding the homeless" while failing to mention that the money went to charity.

Gleaming Toothfairies Pub Crawl July 16

I know y'all love pub crawls for good causes.  Here's a great one that someone was nice enough to forward me info about happening on July 16th.  $20/person.  Proceeds go to providing complimentary healthcare for children who can't afford it.  Did I mention that it involves free apps, food and drink specials?  And that you can dress up like the Rock in "Tooth Fairy"? Sounds like a great time.
